Do Fertility Drugs Increase the Risk of Ovarian Cancer?
There is conflicting evidence to suggest that treatment with fertility drugs may increase the risk of a woman developing ovarian cancer. Experts believe that elevated hormone levels occurring during ovulation increase the risk of ovarian cancer. In addition, they believe that a long series of ovulations uninterrupted by oral contraceptives, pregnancy, or breastfeeding also contribute to an increased risk of ovarian cancer. Studies have shown that women who took fertility drugs but did not become pregnant had a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer than women who were not infertile. Women who did become pregnant after taking fertility drugs did not have an increased risk of cancer. Further research is needed to confirm the link between fertility drugs and ovarian cancer.
